  • Some users have posted on support forums about a Steam service error that arises when they try to launch the platform. The error message states:

In order to run Steam properly on this version of Windows, the Steam service component is not working properly on this computer.

Consequently, the Steam client doesn’t start and users can’t access their games and we can all agree that it is extremely annoying.

In this article, we’ll look at a few solutions to easily get back into the gaming platform.

Do I need to use the Steam service?

For those of you who are wondering whether or not the Steam service is necessary, well, there are some important things to consider.

You should know that it helps the app to install or update games, enables anti-cheat detection in some titles, and assists with many other system-level tasks.

Keep in mind that using it requires some maintenance, and you’ll be able to run or reinstall it only with administrator privileges.

How do I fix the Steam service error?

    1. Configure Steam to run as an administrator

  • If you have a desktop shortcut for Steam, right-click it and select the Properties option.
  • In case you don’t have a desktop shortcut for the software, right-click the Steam EXE file within its folder and select Properties. The default folder path for Steam is: C: > Program Files> Steam (x86)
  • Select the Compatibility tab, then enable the Run this program as an administrator setting there.
  • Click the Apply option, and press the OK button.
  • 2. Disable third-party antivirus software

Users with third-party antivirus software might need to disable those utilities. To do that, right-click the system tray icon for your antivirus software to open its context menu.

Then select a disable option of some description on the context menu to turn off the antivirus utility’s shield for a certain period.

Expert Tip: Some PC issues are hard to tackle, especially when it comes to corrupted repositories or missing Windows files. If you are having troubles fixing an error, your system may be partially broken. We recommend installing Restoro, a tool that will scan your machine and identify what the fault is.

However, since you’re prone to cyberattacks when accessing the Internet without a proper shield, instead of disabling your antivirus altogether, we recommend using less restrictive software such as Eset Internet Security.

This antivirus solution is created to protect all types of digital activities one may engage in.

Eset Internet Security has a powerful firewall that secures your Internet connection and it comes with additional shields that ensure safe shopping, banking, and communication experience.

It has multilayered protection that can detect all sorts of threats including viruses, rootkits, ransomware, worms, spyware, and more.

Do not forget about its high detection rate and is very likely to block threats before they get a chance to cause any damage to your system.
