If you’ve upgraded to Windows 11 from Windows 10, you would have realized by now that the old Snipping Tool is gone from Windows 11, and if you are like me, who used to love the simplicity of it, and found it gone, I know that could’ve been brutalizing!

The old Snipping Tool from the previous Windows version is replaced by Snip and Sketch in Windows 11.

But there is a way to get the Snipping Tool back on your Windows 11 PC. Keep reading to find out how you can get the Snipping Tool.

How do I restore the old Snipping Tool in Windows 11?

Restore the Snipping Tool from Windows.old

Open File Explorer. Opening the File Explorer window

Make a new folder called SnippingTool and save it anywhere on your system’s local drive.

Go to the path C:\Windows.old\Windows\System32 Pasting the location path

Copy the SnippingTool.exe file and paste it into the new folder that was created.

Now, create another folder inside the parent folder of Snipping Tool and name it en-US (or whatever your default language is). Creating en-US folder

Now, go to C:\Windows.old\Windows\System32\en-US

Copy and paste the SnippingTool.exe.mui file into the new en-US subfolder that you created.

Exit File Explorer after you are done. Closing the File Explorer

When upgrading from Windows 10 to Windows 11, the Windows.old directory should be available on your system, and you should be able to restore the Snipping Tool by following the above-mentioned steps.

If you don’t find it, you can use the second method, which is a foolproof method to re-install it on your Windows computer that is running the latest Windows 11.

Restore Snipping Tool from older Windows version

Open File Explorer.

Go to C:\Windows\System32 Opening system32 folder

Copy the SnippingTool.exe and SnippingTool.exe.mui files.

Now transfer them to your Windows 11 computer.

Put the SnippingTool.exe in C:\Windows\System32\ Entering the path to system32

Put the SnippingTool.exe.mui in C:\Windows\System32\en-US Navigating to system32 en-US

Close the File Explorer once done.

Now, double-click on SnippingTool.exe to launch the Snipping Tool on your Windows 11 PC. You can also pin this to the taskbar or start menu to take screenshots quickly.

How to reset the Snipping Tool?

Restarting the file explorer can get rid of whatever that’s causing the Snipping Tool to work improperly on your Windows 11 PC. You can do this by pressing Ctrl + Alt + Del to open the task manager and end the File Explorer task by clicking on End Task.

Or, you can also press CTRL + Shift + ESC to directly go to the Task Manager to end the task.

Why are Snip and Sketch not working?

Snip and Sketch can unexpectedly stop working due to the app’s data on the system or corrupt system files.

This can be easily resolved by simply uninstalling and re-installing the Snip and Sketch applications.
