While Microsoft recently began to push Windows 10 ads to the File Explorer, it seems the software giant is not stopping there. The Redmond company has now started to also promote features of the Edge browser on the Start Menu.

Previously, Microsoft promoted the Edge browser on the taskbar. Now, Edge’s features are starting to appear in the Suggested section on the Start Menu. Clicking on the ad will lead users to another page that shows a comparison of battery consumption between Edge and Chrome, with the Redmond giant claiming that a PC has 32% more battery life with Edge versus Chrome.

The move is seen by many as part of Microsoft’s efforts to convince users of Google Chrome, currently the leading web browser, to make the switch to Edge. The problem, however, is that promoting Edge on the Start Menu does not seem to be a good idea but rather annoying to some users. The File Explorer ads already succeeded in that respect. For example, Windows 10 is now nagging users to purchase a premium OneDrive subscription.

Windows 10 currently includes the OneDrive cloud storage service as a native feature tied to your Microsoft account. With OneDrive, you can get 5GB of space free, but you can also pay to increase cloud storage capacity to 1TB. The offering comes with an Office 365 subscription. While that sounds like a good deal, you do not have to necessarily receive unexpected ads while sifting through your files.

Others see the latest move as an aggressive step toward pushing more advertisements to Windows 10. Nonetheless, there is an option to turn off the new advertisement on the Start Menu. Although Chrome performs better than Edge at present, Microsoft expects to roll out more improvements to the browser as part of the upcoming Windows 10 Redstone 3 update.
