  • 1. Run the Hardware and Devices troubleshooter

  • Type Control Panel in the Search box and click on it from the results.
  • Go to View by option on the top right corner.
  • Click the drop down arrow and select Large icons.
  • Click Troubleshooting.

  • Click Hardware and Devices
  • Click Next
  • If you’re experiencing problems with your computer’s mousepad, then run the Hardware and Devices troubleshooter to resolve the issue.

    This checks for commonly occurring issues and ensures any new device or hardware is correctly installed on your computer.

    Follow the instructions to run the Hardware and Devices troubleshooter.  The troubleshooter will begin detecting any issues.

    2. Boot in Safe Mode

    2.1 Enter Safe Mode

  • Click on the Start button.
  • Select Settings.
  • Click Update & Security.

  • Select Recovery from the left pane.
  • Go to Advanced startup.
  • Click Restart now.
  • Select Troubleshoot from the choose an option screen, then click Advanced options.
  • Go to Startup Settings and click Restart.
  • Once your computer restarts, a list of options will come up.
  • Choose 4 or F4 to start your computer in Safe Mode.
  • 2.2 Exit Safe Mode

  • Type Run in the Search box and click on the app from the results.
  • Type msconfig and click OK.

  • Go to the Boot tab.
  • Deselect or uncheck Safe Boot option box.
  • Restart your computer.
  • Safe mode starts up your computer with limited files and drivers but Windows will still run. To know whether you’re on Safe mode, you’ll see the words at the corners of your screen.

    If the mouse click issue persists, check whether it occurs while your computer is in Safe mode.

    3. Uninstall and reinstall mouse drivers

  • Start Control Panel
  • Go to System, then select the Hardware tab. Select Device Manager.
  • Expand Mice and other pointing devices to open the list.

  • Right click the mouse device you want to remove.
  • Click Uninstall.
  • Click Yes when you get a confirmation message.
  • Restart your computer. Windows automatically detects the change in your hardware.
  • Install the mouse driver.
  • Check for its functionality.

    4. Run a System File Checker scan

  • Type sfc/scannow and press Enter. Wait for the scan to finish.
  • Restart your computer.
  • Sometimes your Windows installation can become damaged and that can lead to various issues. If your mouse click stops working, it’s possible that some core Windows files are corrupted.

    Fortunately, you can fix these types of problems simply by performing a System File Checker scan.

    A System File Checker scan checks or scans all protected system files, and then replaces the incorrect versions, with the genuine, correct Microsoft versions.

    If the mouse click issue persists, try the next solution.

    5. Turn off Touchpad and reboot

  • Open Control Panel.
  • Click on Mouse.
  • Click Device Settings tab on Mouse Properties.
  • Click Disable button to turn off the Touchpad.
  • Restart the system.
  • Enable the button.
  • Does this restore your mouse click? If not, try the next solution.

    6. Allow device to wake from computer

  • Right-click Start and select Device Manager.
  • Right-click on your mouse.
  • Click Properties.
  • Click Power Management tab.
  • Check the Allow this device to wake the computer box.
  • Click Apply and OK.
  • 7. Run the Power troubleshooter

  • Open Control Panel.
  • Type troubleshooting in the search bar of the Control Panel.

  • Click Advanced on the power troubleshooter dialog box, then click Next.

  • Click Run as administrator and give permissions when prompted.
  • Click Next.
  • Follow the onscreen instructions to complete the troubleshooter.

    8. Create a new user account

  • Click Start and select Settings.
  • Select Accounts.

  • Click Add someone else to this PC.

  • Fill in the form with the user name and password. Your new user account will be created.
  • Click on Change account type.

  • Click the drop down arrow and choose Administrator to set the account to administrator level.

  • Restart your computer.
  • Login to the new account you just created.
  • If the issue goes away, then it may mean your other user profile is corrupted.

    You can try the following in case of a corrupted user profile:

  • On your new account, use it to downgrade your usual account.
  • Click Apply or OK.
  • Raise back your old account to its default admin level.
  • Rinse and repeat a few times as this will help to remove any corruption.
  • Leave your account on as Administrator.
  • Check whether the mouse click works when using the newly created account. If it does, then you can either Fix the old user account or migrate to the new account.
