Facebook is preparing to enhance the security level of its Messenger app and will soon roll out a new feature enabling end-to-end encryption. Thanks to Secret Conversations, Facebook allows users to further secure their messages as they will only be readable on the recipient’s end.

The Secret Conversations feature is the perfect choice when you want to secure sensitive conversations. Facebook already uses strong security systems to protect its users, but some of them requested even a higher level of data protection and privacy, and the company delivered.

Your messages and calls on Messenger already benefit from strong security systems — Messenger uses secure communications channels (just like banking and shopping websites) as well as Facebook’s powerful tools to help block spam and malware. We’ve heard from you that there are times when you want additional safeguards — perhaps when discussing private information like an illness or a health issue with trusted friends and family, or sending financial information to an accountant.

Moreover,you can also set a timer to control the length of time each message you send remains visible within the conversation. However, the Secret Conversations feature doesn’t support rich content like GIFs and videos, or payments.

For the time being, the feature is only available to a few users, who agreed to join the beta test group. The testing stage is pretty advanced, as Facebook promises to make this feature widely available this summer.

WhatsApp and Viber have already been using the end-to-end encryption technology for some time now, so Facebook does nothing but join their ranks.

The company hasn’t confirmed yet how the Secret Conversations feature will be deployed. Most likely, it will first be rolled out to the in-house Facebook Messenger app and then to the other platforms, such as Windows and Android.
