The Evernote Touch app is going the way of the dinosaurs and will be replaced by the desktop version. The app first came on the scene for Windows 8 and continued on Windows 10, but now its developer sees no reason to continue building it out, and has decided to shut it down completely.

August 2, 2016 is the official date the Evernote Touch app goes out of commission. We understand that once a device updates itself to the Anniversary Update, the Evernote Touch app will automatically update and replace itself with the desktop version.

This is made possible due to the Windows Store having support for traditional Win32 apps due to the Anniversary Update.

“We are focusing on our commitment to invest in new features and functionality in our core apps,” reads the official statement from Evernote. “Evernote Touch was designed as a companion app to Evernote for Windows, and is not meant to be a full-featured version of Evernote. Evernote for Windows offers an extensive set of capabilities in addition to what Evernote Touch offers, including mouse and keyboard support.”

Returning to the Win32 platform could be interpreted as a step in the wrong direction, seeing as Microsoft and other developers are slowly adopting UWP. Furthermore, it’s possible to convert Win32 apps to Microsoft’s UWP using Project Centennial.

Interestingly enough, the Evernote developer has claimed those using Evernote Touch via a Windows operating system older than Windows 10 will not be affected. Furthermore, the company wants to make clear that the app could stop working the next time your operating system updates.

Once this happens, there won’t be a way to revert back to Evernote Touch and the app will no longer be available for download. As it stands right now, Evernote Touch is practically dead in the water, so enjoy it while it lasts.
