Microsoft is working to implement a reveal password button for its Chromium-based browser. This button will help you make sure if you have correctly entered your login details.
In other words, you will see this button whenever you visit a login page and Microsoft plans to add it to all the Chromium-based browsers, including the new Microsoft Edge and also to Google Chrome.
Some recent reports reveal that this feature will be available as an eye icon in the password fields.
As soon as you click the button, it will display the text of your password. Alternatively, you can use a keyboard shortcut (Alt+F8) to reveal your password.
This clearly means that the feature will only work with manually typed text. Hence, the eye icon won’t appear if the password is auto-completed by the Chromium browsers.
Microsoft developers explained the feature in a new commit in the following manner:
A keydown handler is added to support Alt-F8 hotkey to reveal/obscure password and logics are added to make sure the reveal button only appears with direct user input. If the password is not empty in the first place (ex. autofill or value=xxx) or the control loses focus and regains focus, or the value is changed by script, the reveal button won’t show.
Can I somehow remove the password revealing button?
As a quick reminder, this feature was already available in the new Chromium Edge and the classic Microsoft Edge. Moreover, Microsoft made it clear that there’s no way to remove or customise the reveal password button:
Note we are using -internal-reveal as the pseudo element id, so there is no way for authors to customize or hide the reveal button. This might be changed after a consensus over what id to use is reached, or after the button gets standardized.
It is yet to be seen how some websites that offer a similar functionality will deal with this change. Hopefully, Microsoft will take that into consideration.
At the time of writing this article, Microsoft has not announced any details regarding its release. We hope that the feature will land in the upcoming versions of the browsers.
